Why does the BaByliss straightener not turn on?

The first thing to do when your BaByliss straightener no longer works is to find the source of the breakdown. Indeed, several factors may be the cause of the malfunction, and therefore require different treatment. Here are the causes and their symptoms allowing you to achieve a self-diagnostic :

the electrical outlet no longer works. And yes, sometimes we don't think about the most obvious problems. And yet, it happens that the failure comes from the power source of the straightener and not from the latter. In the event of this failure, your hair straightener should not give no sign of life. Then try changing the electrical outlet. If you are using a power strip or extension cord, remove them. If you find that the socket is faulty, then you will need to have it repaired by a competent person or an electrician.

• one of the components of your BaByliss straightener is defective. It can be the power cord, the On/Off switch, the fuse or the electronic board. In the event of a failure of any of these components, your BaByliss hair straightener should not turn on at all.

• your straightener turns on but does not heat up or does not heat up properly. In this case, it may be the resistance, the thermostat, the fuse or the electronic card. Check the components of your BaByliss straightener that no longer turns on

When your BaByliss straightener no longer turns on and the electrical outlet works, you will have understood that the problem therefore comes from a faulty internal component. The repair then requires being a handyman and having electronic skills because you will have to dismantle the body of the straightener, test the various components, then find the reference of the faulty component and replace it. Note that this very often requires knowing how to solder and that the components can be difficult or even impossible to find.

BaByliss straightener not turning on, what should I do?

You have been warned! risk of electric shock and irreversible damage of your straightener. If you do not have the skills to perform the following manipulations, call a professional. Be aware that depending on the age and model of your straightener, it will sometimes be better to buy a new straightener in view of the price of the parts if you want to repair it yourself or in view of the price of the repair if you appeal to a professional.

Important: if your straightener that no longer turns on is still under warranty, immediately call the after-sales service of the retailer or BaByliss via their online form or by phone at 0327707805 (France). Do not disassemble as you will lose your warranty rights.

If you want to repair your straightener by yourself, remember to turn off the power. Note that since BaByliss straightener models are all different, their assemblies and components may differ. The manipulations described below therefore remain general. Here are the things most likely to have caused the failure:

The power connector

If your BaByliss straightener turns on and off randomly, or that he does not turn on at all (no LED indicator lit), then the problem may come from its power cord. Indeed, if one of its wires is severed, it will no longer be able to transmit the current necessary for the device to operate normally.

First, check if the visible part of the power cord appears damaged (cracked, bare, melted, burnt, small cuts, etc.). If so, it will definitely need to be replaced.

If nothing seems abnormal on its outer part, the inner part may be damaged. You will then need to open your BaByliss straightener and check its cord. Generally, the wires are not covered by a sheath on the base of the device, then towards the heating part, they are under a thermal insulating sheath which allows them to resist the heat. It will be necessary to check that the wires are in good condition and that the sheath has not melted or is not damaged. If the power cord is damaged on one of its parts, it will have to be replaced (or shorten the cable by removing the damaged part if possible).

Note: Avoid wrapping the power cord of your BaByliss straightener too tightly around itself when storing it (especially if it is still hot) as this may damage its internal connectors.

Take the opportunity to check the other connectors of the straightener. Make sure that the wires are in good condition and that they are firmly seated in their connector.

On/Off button

When your BaByliss straightener does not work at all (no light on) the problem may come from the On/Off switch (or the switch depending on the model of your hair straightener). It may be broken or defective. It may also turn on and off inadvertently or once in two. That means he's probably dying.

To verify this hypothesis, you will need to perform a continuity test. The multimeter should beep or display a value close to 0 when running and no beep, 1 or OL when stopped. If the multimeter does not display anything or does not beep in the on position, it is indeed responsible for the failure. It will then have to be replaced.

To check the switch, you must also perform a continuity test set on an ohmmeter. Test each terminal of the switch. If there is no continuity between a pair of contacts, the switch has failed. To solve the problem, it will then have to be replaced.

The fuse

It also happens that your BaByliss hair straightener no longer turns on because its fuse has blown. This happens when there is a power surge or overheating of the device. In this case, the problem very often occurs during operation or if you constantly leave it plugged in.

The fuse is the component responsible for the safety of your straightener. If it detects a potentially dangerous anomaly (overheating, overload), it is designed to burn out and thus cut off the power supply to the electrical circuit. The fuse is usually located at one of the plates of the straightener. You'll need do a continuity test. If there is no continuity, it is broken and you will then need to replace it with an identical fuse.

The power board

if your BaByliss hair straightener no longer turns on or it turns on but has a bug, the problem may come from the electronic card. This printed circuit is used to manage and supply the other electronic components of the straightener. It is usually found inside the straightener, below the LED indicator.

To test the board, use a multimeter set to voltmeter. Test the input supply voltage and the output voltages. If the output voltages are approximately the same as the input, the board is working normally. Otherwise, it is defective. Replace it with an equivalent electronic card.

  1. I have a baby bliss pro which I have had for a few years but hardly ever use as it is very hard to turn on. The red power light is on but the flashing green and red lights work occasionally. It's by no means overused as I've only used it half a dozen times as it's hard to turn on

    • Hello,
There is probably a manufacturing defect in the Power button connector. Unfortunately, if you can no longer claim the guarantee, the only solution will be to dismantle the straightener and check the connections on this side.
