Dyson hair dryer stopping, what to do?

The Dyson hair dryer is a small innovation in the world of hairdressing, both thanks to its physical appearance and thanks to its performance. Considered a high-end device, it is expected to last over time. So, when a malfunction occurs, one can quickly be disappointed. Your Dyson hair dryer shuts off by itself? Then discover in this article the causes that can explain where this sudden stop comes from. Then, how to solve the problem.

Why is your Dyson hair dryer cutting?

When your Dyson hair dryer shuts itself off while in use, in most cases this indicates a overheated. And especially if the three lights flash white or red. Indeed, most hair dryers have a safety system that automatically cuts off the current when the thermostat located in the device detects an operating temperature that is too high. This prevents melting of heat-sensitive components. Dyson Supersonic hair dryers are quality products that all have this safety feature.

There are several things that can cause a Dyson hair dryer to overheat :

  • a overuse often due to too long operating time of the device set at a high temperature.
  • a obstruction at the air vents of the hair dryer. These holes should always be clear.
  • un clogged filter which blocks airflow through the hair dryer.
Note: if you find that the power cord is bare, cut or melted or that the plastic of the hair dryer has melted, turn off the power and stop using the device. This means that there is probably internal damage. By continuing to use the hair dryer you expose yourself to a risk of and in the worst case to fire or electric shock. In this case, replace the faulty Dyson hair dryer. If it is still under warranty, call the Dyson after-sales service.

In more rare cases, it may happen that your Dyson hair dryer suddenly stops due to an internal component failure.

Usually it is a bad contact between internal connectors or at the power cord. In this case, the hair dryer may stop and restart at any time, even when it is not overheating. It can also happen that it stops and never turns back on if the bad contact ends up getting worse. The problem can also come from a failure of a component (thermal fuse, fan, electronic card, thermostat or on/off switch) following its natural wear, a shock or a manufacturing defect which then causes the sudden stop of the hair dryer.

Note: Avoid wrapping the Dyson hair dryer's power cord too tightly around it when storing it (especially if it is hot) as this can damage its internal connectors and end up causing a bad contact and therefore a breakdown!

What to do when your Dyson hair dryer stops by itself?

When your Dyson Supersonic hair dryer shuts off automatically, you will first have to try toidentify the origin of the problem to better solve it. So, to do this, we invite you to follow our troubleshooting guide in order.

Dyson hair dryer stopping what to do?

Allow the hair dryer to cool

The first thing to do when your Dyson hair dryer stops by itself is to check if it is hot or if there is a hot or burning smell. Indeed, these are the signs that indicate that your device is overheating. In this case, it will be necessary let your hair dryer cool down for ten minutes so that it can work again.

Be careful, it is not insignificant that your hair dryer overheats. You will therefore have to try to determine where the problem comes from. For it :

  • If you had just made a intensive use of the hair dryer and especially at high temperature, it's a safe bet that the origin of the sudden stop of the device comes from there. In this case, wait 10 minutes and try to use it again. For the next few times, remember to take breaks or activate the cold air button from time to time to prevent the components from overheating and the device's circuit breaker from being activated.
  • Check that nothing is blocking the air duct of your Dyson hair dryer. Make sure that its air inlets and outlets are clear. If the grilles appear dirty, clean them with a dry, clean, soft (lint-free) cloth.
  • After waiting 10 minutes, try restarting the device. If the Dyson hair dryer keeps stopping unexpectedly, then it may be overheating because it is clogged. In this case, go to the next step in the guide.

If your hair dryer does not turn on at all, even after waiting 10 minutes, we invite you to read the following article: Dyson hair dryer won't turn on, what should I do?

Check the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer filter

When your Dyson hair dryer cuts frequently, there is a high probability that the problem comes from the all filter brewing methods.. It may be too clogged. This is all the more likely if a burning smell emerges when you use it.

In this case, you will need remove dirt, dust, pet hair and hair from the filter for it to work normally again. For it :

  1. Unplug the hair dryer from the electrical outlet
  2. Let it cool for ten minutes
  3. Remove the filter grid which is located at the base of the handle of the hair dryer by turning it slightly anti-clockwise, pulling it down until you reach the cable and then gently opening it in half.
  4. The filter is below. Then remove the dirt, which is on the grille and on the filter, by hand or with the help of a dry, soft cloth. Attention, never use water or liquid to clean the filter and therefore the non-removable gray part!
  5. Refit the filter grille in the same way as removing it. The grid must be clipped and therefore must not move.

Call a professional or Dyson after-sales service

Unfortunately, if the previous checks and manipulations have not solved the problem, there is a strong chance that your Dyson hair dryer shuts off due to internal hardware issue.

Indeed, a component can abnormally overheat due to a failure or a manufacturing defect and cause the automatic circuit breaker. There may also be a bad contact at the level of the connectors and therefore of the internal power supply of the device or of the power cable. And when the device loses power, it turns off. Finally, a component may also have failed due to overheating or natural wear and tear (electronic board, thermostat, thermal fuse, on/off switch, fan, motor, etc.) and cause a breakdown such as the device off.

In this case, the manipulations require electrical clearances more advanced because it will be necessary to open the hair dryer, test the components, then replace the defective one. There is therefore a risk of electrocution and more serious damage to the device. This is why we advise you to call on a professional repairer.

If your Supersonic hair dryer is still on guarantee, contact the after-sales service of the retailer or theDyson support. They will repair or replace your device free of charge. On the other hand, if your appliance is no longer eligible for warranty, you can choose to contact Dyson after-sales service to obtain a more personalized solution, contact an independent professional repairer or buy a new hair dryer. We advise you to make this decision based on the age of your device and the estimated cost of the repair after an estimate.
