Error code 80 on Freebox, what to do?

The error is therefore known to the operator and solutions have fortunately been implemented to resolve the malfunction. Depending on the cause responsible for the appearance of the malfunction, some solutions can be carried out by yourself and some will require the intervention of a Free technician. What does the code ER80 mean on a Free box?

Error 80 usually appears when you have just subscribed to a subscription with the operator Free in an unbundled zone. This error code 80 or Er80 means that your Freebox Server has an identification problem. More precisely, your box is well connected to Free equipment, but it is not recognized by the network following an identification problem related to MAC address from the box. The MAC address is a combination of numbers and letters that identifies a device within a network.

Several causes, often due to an authentication problem on the supplier's DSLAM, can be responsible for the ER80 code. DSLAM is a device that groups together several subscriber lines on a single medium. Then, what are the causes responsible for the appearance of error code 80 and therefore blocking your box on the Free network:

  • Your Free box is correctly connected to the DSLAM but it is not yet known to the Free network. This problem very often occurs at the beginning of the subscription and disappears by itself even after the activation of the line.
  • Your Freebox is connected to a DSLAM but not on the right location. This problem arises from the operator and therefore requires the intervention of a technician.
  • Your Freebox is connected to a DSLAM but the identification is incorrect. In this case, your modem is not recognized. Once again, the problem must be solved by the intervention of the Free service.
  • Your Freebox is connected to a DSLAM but it encounters a bug during startup and therefore during the initialization steps. In this case, the problem can appear at any time during your subscription.

In summary, if you have just subscribed to a subscription with Free, error 80 usually resolves quickly on its own when your row is activated and saved to Free's database. On the other hand if the Er80 code persists or appears during the initialization steps, that is to say when starting the Freebox or during your subscription, the problem requires handling to be able to resolve it.

How to solve the problem related to error code 80 on a Freebox?

Restarting the Free box

For remove the Er80 code that appeared on your Freebox, first try to restart the server and the identification procedure by restarting the box. This restart procedure also allows you to launch the updates and therefore to update the box.

To restart your Freebox Server, several methods exist:

  • Via the Server box by pressing one of the directional arrows to display the menu then by going to the tab To restart. Validate by clicking on OK.
  • By disconnecting then reconnecting the Free modem.
  • Via the Freebox OS interface, riding a identifying you on the interface and by clicking on the Free logo at the bottom left of the menu. Then select Restart the Freebox.
  • Via the Freebox application, by going to the Freebox Server tab and choosing Restart the Freebox Server.

After restarting, your Freebox should turn off and then turn on again by itself and display the time of day. In the event that unfortunately the error code 80 is still displayed on the modem, the simple restart did not work. You will then have to try to reset the box.

Resetting the Freebox

If the error 80 appears again on the screen of your Freebox after its restart, then you can try to reset your box. The reset resets the modem settings to zero. In other words, it is as if you have just received it. This procedure allows the MAC address to be updated and therefore to resolve the malfunction related to identification.

To reset your Free box, proceed as follows:

  1. Unplug the power cord of the Freebox
  2. Wait about 1 minute then reconnect the power cord
  3. Wait a few moments for the Free logo appears on the screen
  4. When the logo appears, touch screen. Three starting levels are displayed
  5. First try the emergency start mode to avoid losing the personalized data of the Freebox and validate.

If after emergency start the Er80 code is still present on the Freebox, restart the procedure but in step 5, then choose the reset in " Factory settings ". Si the error code 80 persists on your Free box after having tested all of these manipulations, unfortunately the intervention of a technician will be necessary to resolve the malfunction. Indeed, it is probably an error on the part of the operator linked to a connection on the wrong location or an identification fault in their database.

Then call on Free customer service online or by phone at 3244. In principle, a technician can reactivate the identification linked to the MAC address of your Freebox if the problem comes from their database. On the other hand, if the failure comes from a connection on the wrong location, a technician will then have to intervene at the line level to resolve the failure.
