Please note: : In this article we deal with the problem of an LG TV that turns on but does not display the picture. If your TV completely refuses to turn on (indicator light is on or remains on standby), see the following article: My LG TV does not turn on anymore, what should I do?

As a first step and before imagining the worst when your LG TV turns on but the screen remains black, it is important to verify that the problem is not due to a bug or a minor malfunction of your device. This is what we will see in this part.

no picture on my LG TV what to do

Software bug on your LG television

When your LG television no longer displays a picture, Firstly do an electrical reset of the system. This procedure helps to remove LG software bugs or small CPU failures. To do this, proceed as follows:

  • Start by unplugging your TV from its power outlet
  • Unplug any accessories and peripherals connected to the TV
  • Wait 2 minutes
  • Reconnect the television by removing the power strip in case you are concerned

If the LG TV turns back on and the picture reappears, the problem may be with a device. Reconnect them one by one, checking the behavior of the television. If the image disappears when you reconnect one of the devices, the problem may be with that device. Contact the brand of the device in question.

If this manipulation did not allow you to find the image on your LG TV, press and hold the on/off button on your remote control for 1 minute (TV off). If nothing helps, continue with the troubleshooting steps below.

Source problem

Please note: : If your LG TV has sound but no picture, go directly to 2 part of our article "Component problem".

It is possible that your LG TV turns on but the screen remains black because you meet a problem with one of the sources of the device. Then carry out the following checks:

  • Check that you have selected the right source image reception. To do this, press the "Source" button on your remote control and select the source of your choice.
  • Check that the problem is not due to a specific source. To verify this hypothesis, test all television sources. If the image appears with another source, the problem therefore comes from the previously selected source.
    • In the event that the TV source no longer works, check that the connection to the TV network is functional and therefore that you are receiving the channels. If you are connected to TNT, make sure that the antenna is correctly connected to your television and set the channels again (see your television's user manual).
    • Si an external source no longer works, check that the connections between the device and your television are good and that the peripheral device is switched on and connected. If this still does not work, try plugging in another assistive device. If that doesn't help, a problem with the connection or a faulty cable may be causing the problem.

Connection problem to an LG television

Although rarer, when your LG TV turns on but the screen remains black this may mean that there are malfunctions in the feeding process. These will include bad connections that interfere with the proper functioning of the television.

Therefore, make sure that the connections are correctly made at the level of the television, the box, the decoder and the mains socket. The cords must be correctly inserted in their respective ports. Also check that the cords are not damaged, bent, melted or burnt.

Component issue when you run out of picture on your LG TV

what to do when my TV turns on but the screen remains black

When your TV turns on but there is no picture, unfortunately this will in most cases be a concern of defective internal component and more particularly backlighting. In this case, the malfunction will be more difficult to repair on your own. If you do not have any skills in electronics or electrical, we advise you to contact a professional to carry out manipulations and repairs.

You have been warned! : risk of damage to the TV. If your LG TV is under warranty, do not carry out any manipulations and contact directly LG support. Risk of electric shock. Unplug the TV from its mains socket before any manipulation.

Backlight problem on LG TV

Un defective backlight will in most cases be involved when your LG TV no longer displays a picture but there is sound. There is an easy trick to make sure. After turning on your TV, bring a lamp or phone flash near the screen. If the image is displayed very light, it is a problem with the backlight.

As its name suggests, the backlight illuminates the screen from behind. When it is broken, the image will no longer be able to be displayed. The backlight problem may be caused by the From in his suit, one or more LED strips, bad contact between the power supply and the slab or T-con board.

Unfortunately, when the backlight is out of order, you will certainly have to replace the entire screen. Indeed, repairing LED strips is a solution that is very rarely offered in repair shops. However, do not hesitate to inquire with repair shops televisions near you if they provide this kind of service (of course in the case where after expertise it is indeed a failure of LED strip and not of the panel).

If you want to repair it yourself, first try to test the T-con board and power supply. If the problem stems from LED failure, be aware that it is difficult to find compatible LED strips. You can still try your luck by searching and ordering the parts on the internet. Also note that to replace one or more LED strips yourself, you will first need to check that the fault actually comes from them. There are video tutorials on the net which explain the procedure to follow to do this and, if the fault is confirmed, which explain how to replace them.

Capacitor problem

In much more exceptional cases, it may be that your LG TV turns on but the screen remains black due to a failure of a capacitor.

Capacitors, or also called condo, store energy and redistribute it to avoid voltage variations. They are essential in a circuit and yet over time they wear out and no longer function well. This will cause problems with the operation of the television. In principle, when one or more capacitors fail, the TV will not turn on at all ou will go out on its own. But it may happen that the malfunction caused is smaller, and that consequently it causes the problem that you know well: your LG TV turns on but the screen remains black.

You will find the capacitors on the power supply board of your LG TV. It will therefore also be necessary in this case to disassemble it to gain access to it. A defective capacitor will be slightly bulging on the top. If you have any doubts, do not hesitate to check it using a multimeter. In the event that you notice that one or more of them are out of service, it will then be necessary to replace them. If you want to know more about the manipulation to locate or change a capacitor, know that many video tutorials exist on the net. Do not hesitate to consult them.

Contact a professional

If after all your attempts, or if you are not able to repair your LG television, then you will need to call a professional. Indeed, unlike other malfunctions, an LG TV that turns on but the screen remains black will not be repaired without parts replacement.

You can then choose to appeal to LG support, to the dealer or to a television repair service. Do not hesitate to ask for a quote to avoid a bad surprise.

Please note: : Remember to check if your LG TV is not under guarantee to avoid repair costs.

    • Hello,
When the picture on a TV turns white, very often it is a failure of the T-Con card. It will then have to be replaced. Depending on the model of TV you have and your electronics skills, the procedure may be more or less straightforward. Video tutorials exist on the net.
However, to ensure the origin of the fault and repair it safely, without risking damage to the TV, we recommend that you call a professional near you.

    • Hello,
It seems, given the symptoms you describe, that the problem is with the motherboard. However, the diagnosis is difficult to make without having analyzed the internal components (even more remotely). It is possible that the fault is due to another component. This is why it is advisable to call in a professional repairer so that he can make a more in-depth diagnosis, and if necessary and after your validation, repair the fault.
      Good luck !

  3. My 10-year-old FG television set broke down. There were signs of this total failure. The sound was there some time ago, but no picture. To try to remedy this, I repeatedly tapped the Off / on button on the television. And it worked Lately this maneuver always took a longer time. Flickers passed furtively on the screen, then nothing.

    • Hello,
The slab was probably at the end of its life following one or more false contact. The tapping probably reconnected the power but when devices start to stop working, unfortunately, that's never a good sign. In your case, since your TV is starting to get older, you may have a lot of trouble finding a compatible screen. And if by luck you succeed, the price may be very high ... To avoid wasting time and money, we recommend that you buy a television.

    • Hello,
Has this problem been present since your purchase or has it appeared after several uses? If the image has always taken a long time to appear, your TV model may simply take a long time to start up. You can still try to enable instant start as follows:
      - Press the Home key.
      - Select "Settings" which are located at the top of the screen. Confirm with the OK key.
      - Click on "Preferences relating to the device" then OK.
      - Click on "Switch on / off" then OK.
      - Activate "Instant switch-on"

If the problem has appeared over time, it is very likely that your panel or a power supply is tired. We recommend that you contact a repairer near you so that they can perform a more in-depth diagnosis and resolve the problem for you before it gets worse.
      Bonne journée.

    This is a LG 47LB650V. Baujahr 11/2014
Also jede Sekunde ein kurzes Bild.
    Your ist da.
Das wiederholt sich die ganze Zeit.
Ich habe mal bit der Teachenlampe auf den Bilschirmgeleuchtet, dann ist sehr dunkel ein Bild zu sehen. zB das Fernsehlogo.
Is it a Fehler im Netzteil? Where is the LED lighting?
Does it need to be repaired? Ich traue mich zu, das selber anzugehen.
    Also have a Voltmeter.

Danke für die Hilfe im Voraus.

Have you tried to make an update (to download on your computer, to put on USB key and to insert on TV). When the logo lights up and the TV remains blocked on the latter, this is the first procedure to do. If the TV partially turns on, also check the power cord. If not, the fault certainly comes from the motherboard, which could explain why it bugs more and more. Depending on your TV model, but also on the diagnosis and the breakdown, the price of the repair is not at all the same. This is why it is very difficult to give you an idea, although replacing the motherboard of a TV at a professional will certainly cost you between 150 euros and 350 euros.

We do not offer a repair service. You can then contact various repairers near you to get a more precise idea of the cost of the repair, explaining the breakdown in detail.

    • Hello,
If you have no picture and no sound, it is more likely that the problem comes from an electronic card. However, since your TV is starting up, the problem may not be with the capacitors. It would then be necessary to test the voltage of the various components of the secondary power supply of the power supply board, then, do the same with the motherboard. You can then replace the component whose value does not conform to what it should be (value indicated on the card) or replace the board (where the defective component is located) in its entirety.

What could be the fault and is it possible to fix it? I also tested the capacitors on the power board which seem to be working normally. Does the TV turn on?
The screen is on but no picture? If you have sound but no picture, it could be the failed T-con board. We invite you to watch this video which could help you in replacing this card: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mf9b2Ald530. It can also be the slab.
On the other hand, if you have no sound, but the backlight works, it is unlikely that the problem comes from the panel because the speakers have no connection with the panel. Then it could be a power board or motherboard problem. Since you have already changed the motherboard, if the connections have been made correctly and the card is identical, then the problem is certainly with the power supply card. Besides the capacitors, many components may have failed on the turntable's secondary supply. You then need to test the input and output voltages of the board and components. We invite you to watch this video to help you test the power board: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WrotwbobGfY.

It all depends on the model and age of your TV, but also on the origin of the breakdown. But if the problem comes from the slab, the repair will necessarily be expensive (several hundred euros). If, on the other hand, the malfunction comes from the connection cable between the T-con board and the panel or from the LED strips, the repair will be less expensive. But count all the same more than 100 euros, even more than 200 euros (between the diagnosis, the labor and according to the extent of the repair).

  32. My LG TV is 4 years old. When you turn it on it looks good and all of a sudden the image starts moving like it has interference for a few seconds and at the end you put the screen black.
    What could it be ?

Do you continue to have sound when the picture disappears?
In this case it could be the T-con board (although rare because when this fails the picture glitches, jumps, changes colors, goes white etc but rarely goes all black) or a bad contact between the cable that connects the T-con card to the panel, which would explain why at first it works well. In this case, you must reconnect this tablecloth and if the problem persists, replace it. If it is not the power supply, then the panel or the LED strips are certainly defective. In this case, we advise you to entrust the failure to a professional repairer by asking the price beforehand, but unfortunately, it will cost you several hundred euros if it is a slab failure.

while watching the screen went black - the sound continued - there was a slight 'tick' when this happened. I've tried turning it off and on again and now there's a chime that sounds every time I can't remember being there before. There is also a very faint tick at about 2s intervals when turned on. Tried all unplug resets etc. Ideas ? Thank you.

    • Hello,
It would be necessary to check on the side of the tablecloth of the slab (see if it is correctly connected and if it works) and on the side of the T-con card (see if it works).

  34. My 43-inch LG television turns on, the lamps are on, there is sound but there is no image on the screen.
Which part can cause this? Thanks

If the lamps are on, the problem is probably with the T-con board. It can also be in more rare cases the motherboard or the power supply.

  35. Hello,
I have an LG 55UK6500AUA TV. Not so long ago the image on TV died out. The TV works with sound and backlight, but no picture. I finally got around to troubleshooting. If I connect my phone (using Smart View) I can get sound and can see the lights adjust when I switch/rotate the phone screen. I did all the general troubleshooting. Boards (main, t-con and power) have been replaced. When the back of the TV is off, you can see the backlights come on perfectly. There is simply no picture.

Any idea what it could be or what more I can do?
