My PS4 does not turn on anymore, why and what to do?

Your PS4 refuses to turn on? Does it turn off by itself or freeze on a black screen? Like all electronic devices, PlayStation consoles can experience malfunction. They can be multiple and be more or less serious. But fortunately, in most cases, some basic checks and operations allow it to turn it back on. My PS4 does not turn on what to do

In the first part, learn the different causes that can explain the failure of your console. Then find out all the solutions, tips and advice to fix your PS4 that refuses to turn on.

Why does your PS4 no longer turn on?

When your PS4 no longer works, multiple factors may be at the origin. Therefore, you will have to carry out various checks and operations to find the origin of the problem and the related solution. Then, what are the different causes that can prevent your PlayStation 4 from turning on?

1 / Your PS4 no longer turns on but sends signs of life (beep or light signal)?

In this case, the failure is most likely due to a minor bug in the software or in the console's microprocessor. This is all the more likely if your PS4 no longer turns on but the emitted light is blue. The problem is in principle simple to solve and does not require professional help. It could also be a power surge issue that activates the console's security mode. And this especially after a power cut or a thunderstorm.

2 / Your PS4 turns off by itself?

It is then most likely an overheating or poor maintenance of your console (dust, dirt, insects). The failure may be more or less easy to resolve depending on the source of the problem.

3 / Your PS4 no longer turns on and gives no sign of life?

In this case, the failure can be explained by a problem with the power supply, connections, hard drive or faulty internal components that are usually found on the motherboard. These problems are in the majority of the cases more consequent, because they require the replacement of parts. In some cases, professional help will be required.

Find out in the next part the solutions to each of these problems.

What to do when your PS4 no longer turns on?

First of all, if your PS4 that no longer turns on is still eligible for warranty, we advise you to call on PlayStation support or your console dealer for free repair or replacement service.

why your PS4 no longer works

Restart your PS4

When your PS4 no longer turns on, it may be that software bugs to minor microprocessor malfunctions are responsible for the problem. To eliminate these potential malfunctions, you will need to restart your console. As a first step, simply perform an electrical reset which involves turning off the console, unplugging it, and then turning it back on. If that doesn't work, restart your console using safe mode. Discover the detailed procedures below:

1 / Switch off then on the console

First of all, when your PS4 does not turn on at all or partially, just try toturn off then restart your PS4 by doing the following:

  1. Make sure your PlayStation is turned off by pressing the power button for a few seconds.
  2. Unplug your PlayStation from its power cable and wait 30 minutes.
  3. Reconnect the power cord and turn the console back on using the button on the front panel.
  4. Press the PS button on the DualShock controller.
Note: This electrical reset does not delete any saved data.

2 / Restart in safe mode of the console

If nothing happens and your PS4 won't turn back on, try to turn it back on with safe mode. Please note, this procedure is only valid if your PS4 has crashed, does not start correctly, or does not turn on anymore but it emits a light or sound signal. If your PlayStation doesn't turn on at all and doesn't show any signs of life, this procedure won't make a difference. Proceed directly to the next troubleshooting step.

  1. Make sure the console is turned off by pressing and holding the power button.
  2. After the PlayStation is turned off, press and hold the power button until you hear a second beep approximately 7 seconds after the first beep.
  3. Connect your controller to the console then press the PS button.
  4. PS4 Safe Mode is displayed. Select "Restart PS4". You will not lose any of your data through this mode.

If you have successfully restarted your PS4 by following the Safe Restart procedure, the failure is most likely due to a software bug and especially an incomplete system update. To prevent the problem from happening again, proceed without waiting for the latest Update available on your console.

Note: If you are used to playing offline, remember to connect to a WiFi network from time to time so that updates can be made.

If your console does not turn on even after safe mode, continue to the next troubleshooting step.

Hard drive problem

If your PS4 no longer works even after trying safe mode, the hard drive may be defective or not properly connected. In this case, your console will probably not transmit any light or sound signal. You can then try to To take it out. Many tutorials exist on the web to show you the procedure to follow. Warning: removing the hard drive may damage your console and void the warranty. If you are not competent to do this, do not hesitate to contact a professional.

Once the hard drive is removed, start the PlayStation. If it turns on, try reconnecting the hard drive. If nothing helps, replace the hard drive.

Power supply and connections problem on the PS4

A PS4 that does not turn on anymore can be explained by a faulty power supply to bad connections. In this case, the console does not turn on and does not transmit any light or sound signal. Several checks can then be made to try to detect the origin of the failure and, consequently, the solution to repair it:

1 / Check the connections and cables. Make sure that the cables are properly plugged into their ports and that they are not damaged (stripped, bent, burnt, melted or damaged).

2 / Check that your wall outlet is working. To do this, plug another functional electrical device into the outlet. If it turns on again, the outlet is not the cause. If it does not turn back on, the problem is all found. Then call an electrician to repair the faulty outlet.

3 / If you are using a power strip, remove it. Indeed, in addition to being able to be faulty, a multi-socket causes worries of tensions and electrical parasites likely to interfere with the good functioning of the PS4.

4 / Test the power cord. The power cord wears out over time and eventually stops working. Indispensable to operate the PS4, it is very likely that it is responsible for the failure. Try replacing it with another new or compatible power cable.

Note: Your PS4 is powered by a standard C7 power cable that is found on many electronic devices. Try to find a compatible cable that you already own before purchasing a new one.

5 / The power button can also be responsible for a PS4 that no longer turns on. This is much more likely if you've recently disassembled your PS4 and unintentionally didn't reconnect the power button properly. If you have already disassembled your console and it is no longer under warranty, remove the cover again and check that the metal part that connects the power button and the cover is not broken. Also, be careful when replacing the cover that the part contacts the internal system start button. If your console has never been disassembled, do not do this.

PS4 power supply problem

Among the common problems that cause your PS4 to stop working, we also find the power supply. When it is out of order, the console will give no sign of life (no light or sound signal). The power supply unit can fail due to a power surge, and in particular following a thunderstorm, or simply due to natural wear and tear. To avoid encountering this failure, try to limit movement and handling of your console.

The good news is that the power supply can be replaced by a new one. However, this requires specific knowledge to diagnose the problem and extensive skills to replace it. We advise you to call in a professional.

Overheating problem on your console

Si your PS4 has turned off by itself and does not turn on, it may be that overheating is the cause. Indeed, the PlayStation has a thermal sensor which causes the immediate shutdown of the console when it detects an abnormally high temperature. That's what we call security mode. In this case, you will often see a message indicating that the console is overheating or you will hear a fan noise when it turns off. Additionally, when the console turns off you should hear a beep. To fix this problem and prevent it from happening again, here are the recommendations:

  • Use the PS4 in a ventilated place, away from humidity and heat (below 40 ° C).
  • Avoid placing objects in front of the ventilation holes so as not to obstruct them. Maintain a distance from any surface and the console of at least 50 cm.
  • Clean the PS4 regularly and be careful of dirt and dust that can end up clogging the filters and ventilation of the console and interfere with its proper functioning.

If your PS4 keeps turning off on its own and refuses to turn back on, there may be a fan failure or an temperature sensor defective be the cause. In this case, it will be necessary to call a professional to repair the malfunction.

Maintenance issue on your PS4

Un maintenance problem can cause malfunctions and in particular that of your PS4 that refuses to turn on. Indeed, the dust, dirt and sometimes bugs may become lodged inside the console and prevent it from functioning properly. If you notice that your PlayStation is particularly exposed to dirt and dust or that bugs are potentially inside, then it will need to be cleaned.

Note: Disassembling and opening the PS4 for cleaning may void your warranty. If you have never opened your console, do not disassemble the device. Contact PlayStation support or your PlayStation retailer's service center. If your product is no longer under warranty, you can try to do it yourself by referring to YouTube tutorials. However, we recommend that you instead call a professional to avoid damaging your console.

Internal component problem

When your PS4 still refuses to turn on after all the checks and manipulations seen previously, unfortunately, the failure will surely be more important and will require professional help to diagnose and repair it.

Indeed, a PlayStation consists of many electronic and electrical parts. Constantly stressed and yet relatively fragile, they can wear out or unsolder due to temperature variations. As a result, they end up breaking down. Being essential for the correct functioning of the console, when any of these components fail, the PS4 can no longer turn on.

Moreover, if your faulty PS4 has been dropped, shocked, or oxidized, the problem is surely related. In this case, all you have to do is contact a professional to find the broken or broken part and replace it. Be aware, however, that in some cases and given the price of the repair, it is better buy back a PlayStation...

Finally Yes your PS4 no longer turns on after a power cut, it is possible that the strong variations in voltage associated with it have triggered the security mode of the console. In this case, unplug your console, wait 20 minutes and then turn it on again. If your PlayStation 4 still won't turn on, try restarting it in Safe Mode. And if nothing helps, the surge may have blown a component. This is, however, much rarer and usually occurs in the event of a very high voltage peak, for example during a storm.

    • Hello,
Are you sure that the problem comes from Play and not from the connection between your TV and your Play? Have you tried plugging it into another TV?
In principle, a reset is not supposed to cause a bug in the PS4 if you have respected the handling since the operating system is simply reset. We advise you to contact PlayStation after-sales service, who can provide you with more personalized assistance. Good luck …

    • Hello,
You must check that you have not disconnected a power wire and that they are therefore all in their terminals. How did you clean the PS? Did you use a product? Did you follow the instructions for cleaning the PlayStation indicated on the user guide?

    • Hello,
Have you done the latest updates?
If you use a power strip, remove it and plug your PS4 directly into the electrical outlet, without any intermediate accessory. Then check that the power cable is not too worn (cracked, bare, damaged, etc.) because the current delivered and reaching the console may not be sufficient to meet the needs of your greedy games.
If your PS4 seems to be overheating (abnormal temperature or noise, error or overheating message), it will need to be cleaned. Is it still eligible for warranty? If so, call the after-sales service. If not, you can try to open it and clean it. Indeed, if dirt or dust accumulates on the various components, overheating can occur very quickly and trigger the automatic circuit breaker of the console.
Finally, if nothing helps, the problem may come from a faulty internal component (connectors, fan, power supply, motherboard, hard drive). For an in-depth analysis, we invite you to contact PlayStation after-sales service or a professional repairer near you.
