My roller shutter remote control no longer works, what should I do?

The remote control of your roller shutter seems to be broken? Unfortunately, like any electrical device, the components of a roller shutter can be faulty. Thus, when your shutter no longer responds, it can obviously be the remote control but also components internal to the shutter: motor, blades, or even the limit switches. It will therefore be interesting to check where the fault is coming from before determining what to do when a roller shutter remote control no longer works.

Check if the fault comes from the roller shutter or the remote control

Maintaining the cleanliness and efficiency of your period swimwear is essential. Whether you choose to determine if the fault is from the transmitting device (remote control) or the receiver (rolling steering wheel). If your roller shutter remote control has a bright LED and it no longer works, the fault is all found and it comes from the remote control. If it does not have an LED or it lights up, you can check its working condition thanks to various manipulations.

why the roller shutter remote control no longer works

Note: If the roller shutter remote control which no longer works is a Velux or an Somfy, read our more detailed articles on this subject by clicking on it.

Change the batteries in the remote control

At first, when your roller shutter remote control no longer works or at least it doesn't seem to work anymore, you need replace the old battery with a new battery compatible. If the remote control uses more than one battery, replace all of them at the same time and make sure they are identical.

Also be aware that if your remote is reacting poorly or you need to be near the shutter for it to respond, the batteries may be too weak to send a clear signal. In this case, you will also need to replace the batteries.

Use another roller shutter remote control

Note: There are different types of roller shutter controls. The remotes that use radio mode to control the roller shutter and which therefore require programming to be paired with the shutter. The wired switches which control the roller shutter thanks to a box fixed to the wall. Here we are dealing with the case of remote controls that use radio mode.

To test whether the problem is with your remote control, you will need the help of another remote control or another component:

1 / If your remote control can be paired with other roller shutters then synchronize there with another shutter. If it does not work with the other shutter, the remote control is therefore defective.

2 / If you have at your disposal another shutter remote control that works, try to synchronize it with the broken shutter. If it does not work correctly, then a component internal to the shutter is responsible for the malfunction (motor, limit switches, blades). If the shutter works again, then the remote control is defective.

3 / If your roller shutter remote control no longer works and therefore faulty, proceed to the troubleshooting steps below. If the failure is from the roller shutter, then go directly to the last part of our article.

The roller shutter remote control no longer works, what to do?

Note: Be aware that when the remote control is faulty, the shutter does not react at all because the receiver on the roller shutter no longer receives the signal. Whereas in the event that your shutter reacts badly to commands, the problem most likely stems from a failure on the shutter. In this case, go directly to the last part of our article.

As a first step, if you have not followed the previous steps, remember to replace the old batteries in the remote control with new ones. new batteries.

Then it will take check if the problem does not come from a desynchronization or connection bug between the remote control and the shutter by carrying out a reprogramming and reset on the remote control. Finally, if nothing works and your roller shutter remote control still not responding, this means that she is defective following an internal HS component. You will therefore have to replace it.

My roller shutter remote control no longer works, what should I do?

Reprogram the roller shutter remote control

When your rolling shutter remote control no longer works, you will first have to try to reprogram. This allows you to see if the problem is not due to a desynchronization between the remote control and the roller shutter.

Depending on the make and model of your remote, the procedure may be different. We advise you to refer to the user manual on your remote control or to call the brand's customer service for the exact procedure. Here are the most common brand reprogramming procedures:

  •  Programming procedure for a rolling shutter remote control of the SIMU and SOMFY RTS brands :
    • Press the PROG button on the remote control for 5 seconds.
    • Wait for the shutter to make a round trip
    • Press the PROG button on the remote control for 1 second again.

The motor should then do a round trip to confirm the pairing. If the roller shutter does not move, this may mean that the programming did not work because the transmitter no longer works or that the fault is with the motor and not with the remote control.

Note: If your roller shutter is controlled by a wired switch or if the remote control is connected to a box, reprogramming will be done at the level of the box. Consult your brand's user guide.

Reset the roller shutter remote control

If the restart procedure did not work and your rolling shutter remote control still does not work, you will then need to launch a reset remote control and its roller shutter. This allows to resolve connection issues which may have intervened between the remote control and the shutter and which are therefore likely to be the cause of the malfunction.

Again, depending on the make and model of your remote control and roller shutter, the reset procedure may be different. We advise you to refer to the user manual for your shutter or to call the brand's customer service for the exact procedure.

Procedure for resetting a SOMFY RTS roller shutter remote control:

Warning: Make sure that the other motors of your Somfy roller shutters are disconnected to avoid deprogramming all your roller shutters with radio receivers.

  1. Cut the power supply to the Somfy motor for 3 seconds
  2. Turn the power back on for 7 seconds
  3. Cut off the power supply to the motor for 3 seconds then turn on the power again
  4. Open the Somfy remote control and hold down the PROG button for 8 seconds
  5. At the end of the second movement of the motor, the operation is validated

Subsequently, you will have to reprogram the remote control and carry out the basic settings of the shutter (configuration of the direction of rotation and limit switch settings).

Change faulty hardware

Note: If your rolling steering wheel remote control that no longer works is still under guarantee, contact the brand's customer service directly. Remember to check the guarantees with the manufacturers which can sometimes extend up to 5 years, even 10 years!

If your roller shutter remote control still does not work after having seen all the previous manipulations, you will then have to replaced. If you have noticed that the problem does not come from the remote control but from your roller shutter, it will then be necessary to determine the origin of the problem (motor, limit switches, blades, component integrated on the motor receiver board) then replace defective component.

Roller shutter failure

Be aware that if the roller shutter goes up or down and you cannot stop it, the problem most likely stems from a limit switch adjustment problem. This adjustment is made when installing the roller shutter. In this case, the fault is easily repairable since you will have to reset and reprogram it. Refer to your user manual or contact the brand of your equipment. It can also be a component problem on the receiver board located in the engine. In this case, it will be necessary to call a professional or replace the entire motor.

If, on the contrary, the roller shutter no longer reacts at all, the failure is most certainly the engine. You will then have to replace it by checking the compatibility with your equipment.

Remote control failure

If you are sure the problem is with the remote control, you can then buy a remote control if the reset and reprogramming procedures did not work. Be sure to check if the remote control is compatible with your roller shutter, even if they come from the same manufacturer. Indeed, it is possible that the different generations of models are not compatible with each other (except for some brands like for example Simu).

In addition, the technologies of each brand are in principle not compatible except Somfy RTS with Simu HZ. feel free to contact the brand's customer service your roller shutter or to a DIY or home improvement store for any information request.

In short, before replacing the motor or the remote control, it is therefore essential to identify the brand and the radio technology used so that your equipment is compatible, even if it comes from the same manufacturer!

      Hello,
It all depends on the brand and model, but in principle yes it is possible. The best thing is to ask the manufacturer of your roller shutter.

    • Hello,
All your remote controls no longer work? They don't turn on at all? Or the shutter no longer responds to any of your remote controls? Because the shutter receiver may no longer receive the signal from your remote controls.

  3. Hello. I have a garage shutter that works with the ZAFFER remote control. But one of the two remotes and my car keys were stolen. This one was stolen from me.
The 2nd remote in my possession works very well. But, as thieves have my first remote control, I would like to change it so as not to be robbed again.
I was told that it was necessary to "reset" with a new remote control. Is it correct ? And how to ?
