LG TV does not turn on and the red LED flashes, what to do?

Many malfunctions can occur on a television. So when your LG TV decides not to turn on overnight, there is unfortunately nothing unusual about it. It will nevertheless be necessary to detect the signals to find the origin of the fault and thus find the corresponding solutions to try to make it work correctly again. Among the signals, you will find in particular the flashing red light. Your television will then send you a very clear message: a fault is preventing it from turning on. So what can be this problem? And What to do with your LG TV no longer turns on and the red LED is flashing? Find out the answers in this article.

What to do when my LG TV does not turn on and the red LED flashes?

Note: First of all, consult the user guide for your LG TV model. Indeed, on some instructions you will find specific indications on the procedure to follow when the LED flashes.

Perform an electrical reset

LG TV that does not turn on and red LED flashes what to do

When your LG TV no longer turns on and the Red LED flashes, this can signal a processor or software malfunction. The first reflex to have is to proceed to an electrical reset to remove these possible malfunctions that prevent your TV from starting up. To do this :

  1. Unplug your LG TV cord from the wall outlet.
  2. Wait 2 minutes.
  3. Reconnect the cord to the wall outlet (without multiple socket).

If your LG TV still won't turn back on, continue troubleshooting. If the red light no longer flashes but your TV still does not work, read this article.

Use a hair dryer to turn on your LG TV

When your LG TV does not turn on and the red LED flashes, a relatively effective trick is to use a hair dryer to try to turn it back on.

Indeed, very often, the flashing red light means that an internal component is defective and in most cases it is the capacitors (see next part of this article). To help them maintain their role despite the loss of their value, it will then be necessary to warm them up. The hair dryer takes on this role thanks to the hot air it diffuses.

To perform this technique, follow these steps:

  1. Connect a hair dryer near your LG TV
  2. Turn it on and direct its blower through the vents on the back of the TV
  3. Continue for a few minutes while your TV turns back on.
  4. If this does not happen, try to press the "Power" button on your remote control while keeping the hair dryer on and pointing at the television.
Note: Stop handling if your LG TV does not turn on after 5 minutes to avoid damaging your device.

Please note that this solution is temporary and has nothing conventional about it. This is a troubleshooting tip. Subsequently, it will be necessary determine the source of the problem which often results from a failure of capacitors. Refer to the next part of our guide to learn more.

Check components and power

The most likely cause of the problem when your LG TV does not turn on and the red light is flashing is that she suffered a internal component failure or that she has a problem in its feeding process.

First, here are the basic checks to perform regarding a power supply malfunction :

  • Check that the cables are firmly seated in the ports and that they are not damaged.
  • Remove the power strip to avoid voltage problems and the interference it can cause.
  • If you have a multimeter, check that the voltage of the wall outlet and the power cable are high enough.

If all these parameters are correct, it will now be necessary check that the power board and motherboard are working. To do this, you will need to disassemble your LG TV by removing the screws on the back of the latter.

Note before disassembling your LG TV: check that your LG TV is no longer under warranty. If this is the case, do not disassemble your TV as you may not be able to take advantage of the warranty.

After removing the LG TV back cover, check the following:

1/ Visually check that no component on the motherboard and on the power supply board is damaged. They must not be deformed, damaged, melted or burnt. You can also test that the voltage passes on the plates thanks to a multimeter. If no measurement is displayed, the power supply is defective. It will then be necessary to determine the source of the problem and replace the card or the component that has failed. Call in a professional for in-depth expertise.

2/ Check that the capacitors are working. Indeed, in the vast majority of cases, when an LG TV no longer turns on and the red LED flashes, it means that a capacitor has failed. Capacitors are used to fluctuate voltage variations in a circuit. Thus, they store voltage and distribute it with constant intensity when the TV is on standby or slightly higher when the TV is on. In other words, they store the voltage to then distribute it and thus facilitate the start-up of the television. When they are out of order, they no longer deliver enough voltage to start it. A failed capacitor will be swollen on top. You can also measure it through a multimeter. If one or more of them are defective, replace them.

Be aware of the risk of electric shock and damage to the device. Switch off the power by unplugging your TV from the wall outlet before handling. If you are not proficient in the manipulations, call in someone close to you or a professional.

Who to contact when the LG TV does not turn on and the indicator light flashes?

  1. Hello my LG 42 PQ 2000 televisrur has trouble starting it is May 2009 it is younger, I was told about a capacitor which could be defective. Can you tell me which one to change, thank you for your understanding.

    • Hello,
First, you need to remove the back cover of your television to access the power supply board. Then locate the capacitors. These are cylindrical shaped pieces. If one or more of them is slightly bulging on the top (or you notice a small slit on their "cap"), they are defective.

To be sure that it is faulty, you can also use a multimeter to measure the resistance on the two terminals (legs) of each capacitor. The downside here is that you have to unsolder the capacitor to measure it so that other components in the circuit do not skew the measurement.
Once the capacitor is desoldered and disconnected from the circuit, it must be fully discharged. To do this, make a short circuit with a resistor (or a screwdriver for example by placing it on the two terminals).
Then proceed to the measurement of it. To do this, put your multimeter on the ohmmeter setting. Put the red test probe of the multimeter on the + terminal of the capacitor and the black test probe on the - terminal. If you read a very low or no resistance (OL) the capacitor is not functional due to a short circuit and you will need to replace it.

Do not hesitate to watch video tutorials by typing "how to test a capacitor" or "how to change a capacitor on a television" to help you in the manipulation. And beware of the risk of electric shocks! Remember to disconnect the power before disassembly.

      Good luck !

My LG TV 70inch model 65UH5500-UA when you plug in you press the power button appears LG after 1second the screen turns off flashing red led. What to do ?

    • Hello,
In your case, it is most likely a capacitor failure. Do you have electronics skills? If so, you can open the back cover to access the power supply board and then check visually or by measuring their voltage (using a multimeter) the capacitors (cylindrical parts). Tutorials exist on the net to show you the procedure to follow. If it turns out that the capacitors are out of order, you will have to remove them by unsoldering them and replace them with new ones that are identical or compatible by re-soldering them on the electrical circuit.
If you are not fit for handling and although it is unfortunately more expensive, we advise you instead to call a professional near you to avoid further damage to your TV.
      Bonne journée.

    • Hello,
The click you hear is the typical noise a capacitor makes when it is defective. Although it is rare for a capacitor to blow after 20 days, this is the most likely hypothesis. We advise you to call the customer service of the retailer or LG after-sales service to make your warranty work.

    • Hello,
Can you test the electronic board? If the output voltage is zero or less than the input voltage, the problem is certainly a component that has failed on it. You must then check the capacitors which are often involved in the type of failure you describe and replace if there is a faulty one, then test the other components and replace the faulty one if possible, or replace the board fully. Obviously, if it is not the electronic card, there may be a bad contact in the power supply. In this case, it will be necessary to check the internal connections. And if nothing helps, we advise you to go to a professional because the breakdown requires solid electrical clearances to test the rest of the elements of your TV.

  6. Hi, I have a 55 inch LG Plasma TV
suddenly the menu appeared and turned on and off automatically, only the first channel of the digital terrestrial device worked, it was impossible to change the channel or adjust the volume from the remote control or from the controls on the TV, flashing red power light, is it repairable or should it be thrown away?
    Thank you

    • Hello,
If you have electrical clearances, you can try to test the electronic card (input and output voltage) because it seems that your TV started with software bugs, which often come from this board. If the output voltage is not similar to the input voltage or is zero, it must be changed. But depending on the age and model of your TV, it can be relatively expensive (about a hundred euros) and in this case, it is certainly better to replace it.

  9. Hello,
I have an LG Oled G1 TV. Since this evening, when I try to turn it on with the remote control, the red light which was fixed, flashes, on the screen which is all black, a green vertical bar scrolls from top to bottom in the center of the screen, then disappears. You hear a click, then the LED turns solid red. I always have the same result. I checked the cables, unplugged the mains for 2 min, nothing helped. Thank you for your help.

    • Hello,
It would be necessary to try to look at the side of the plate and more particularly of the capacitors. The click you hear is from a capacitor trying to "turn on".

  12. My 65 inch LG OLED TV screen suddenly went black and turned off. I turned it back on via the remote and the picture reappeared for 2 seconds before the TV turned off again. When the picture returns briefly, only 3/4 of the picture is visible, the rest of the screen is an irregular black picture. I hope someone knows where the problem is and if it is fixable.

  15. Hello, I bought a new LG OLED 77 C1 TV from a wholesale dealer with no warranty. Unfortunately, a few days after purchase, the TV would not turn on sometimes. This seems to be a random problem, mostly solved by performing a reset procedure with the power cord and power button. Sometimes it won't turn on...in these cases the screen isn't completely black, there are faint horizontal colored lines. Once turned on, the TV works perfectly.
I took the TV to a repair center. Their diagnosis is that the screen must be replaced, which costs more than the television itself!

Based on the article, I suspect a simple capacitor may be the cause. The repair center tells me that the panel is a one-off and cannot be repaired. Is this correct or do I need to find another repair center?
(FYI I live near Paris in France)

    • Hello Thomas,
When your TV refuses to turn on, what does the light do (goes off, remains fixed, flashes)?
Unfortunately the diagnosis seems to be correct, especially if they have analyzed your TV because a physical diagnosis is always more accurate than a remote diagnosis. If it was a capacitor, the TV would not turn on at all or not every time, but it is not responsible for the colored lines on the TV… On the other hand, strange that it works perfectly other times . Maybe there is a bad contact in the panel's power supply. Or the power board is dying. These components should be tested to be sure and, if they are good, the slab is indeed in question.
Finally, the slab can be changed but it is very difficult to find the part (or sometimes even impossible) hence the very high price. In any case, even if a repairer offers to replace the slab, it will be very expensive (because the repair is also tedious).
On the other hand, you can operate the legal guarantee of conformity if you bought the television in France! It is valid for 2 years for all products purchased from a professional seller. Find out more, but he does not have the right to refuse you this guarantee, which is a guarantee registered in the law.

    • Hello,
Yes absolutely, you have to be very careful. First, put the screen on a stable work surface and place a padded protection in front of the screen (blanket, protective cover, etc.). Remove the screws one by one, then open the rear panel by unclipping it. Attention, the best remains to be two to carry out this manipulation. One can hold the screen, and the other takes care of unclipping. Then, you can either remove the power supply board by unhooking its connectors to avoid working on the screen and taking the risk of dropping it, or lay the screen down on the protection.
Obviously, always be patient, delicate and avoid forcing too much if you notice resistance. Also, some TV back panels are glued (when there are no screws) and cannot be removed by you without breaking everything. In this case, you need to approach a professional repairer.
