Somfy roller shutter remote control problem, what to do?

Yet renowned for its reliable and quality products, the Somfy company is not exempt from malfunctions. Unfortunately, it can then happen that the remote control has a problem overnight. But what could be the origins of this failure? How to diagnose it? And how to repair a Somfy roller shutter remote control that no longer works? Find the answers below, in our comprehensive troubleshooting guide.

Why does your Somfy remote control no longer work?

Somfy roller shutter motors can be controlled by radio remote control (IO or RTS) or wired wall control (switch). Depending on your installation, the Somfy remote control problem you are having may have different origins :

– In the case of a SOMFY IO or RTS Telis, Centralis or Smoove RADIO REMOTE CONTROL :

If you have one of these types of remote control, it is possible that your Somfy remote control no longer works following :

  • a problem of batteries
  • a desynchronization between the shutter and the remote control following a software bug or a power outage
  • a faulty remote control. This is often the case after a shock, but it can also happen following the natural wear and tear of one of its internal components.

The symptoms which may explain that the problem does indeed come from the Somfy remote control are: the Remote control LED not lighting up, who flashes red or who stays solid red, repeated pressing of the keys of the remote control before having a response from the shutter, or no reaction from the flap when you press the keys. If the LED indicator on the remote control lights up green but the shutter does not move at all, moves slightly or makes a strange noise, the failure is certainly due to the power supply or the roller shutter motor.

– In the case of a SOMFY WIRED WALL CONTROL:

In the case of a Somfy roller shutter switch failure, the problem usually comes from a power failure and therefore connections. When this happens, the LED present on the control should not light up confirming that it is not receiving power. If your roller shutter is controlled by a Somfy wired control, first make sure that a circuit breaker/switch/circuit breaker is down on your electrical panel. Then, test the connection by removing the switch, then making a continuity test using a multimeter (or by testing the supply voltage of the socket which should be approximately 230V using a multimeter).

If the failure is proven, you will have to replace the connectors or the control in its entirety and connect them to the electrical network. If the failure does not come from the connectors, then it certainly comes from the engine. These manipulations are complex and require electrical skills. They must be carried out by a competent person, a professional in the sector or an electrician. Caution, risk of electric shock!

Somfy roller shutter remote control problem, what to do?

When your Somfy roller shutter radio remote control no longer works, the problem may therefore come from a hardware malfunction due to dead batteries or a faulty component or software malfunction following a deprogramming between the transmitter and the receiver.

Since several factors can be the cause of the failure of your shutter, we will try step by step to diagnose the problem for so the solve effectively. Obviously, if you are not competent for one or more manipulations, go to the rest of the article or call on Somfy assistance or to an independent professional repairer.

Note: Remember to check if your roller shutter still has the right to guarantee (between 5 and 7 years) to obtain an intervention free of charge.

Changing the Somfy remote control battery

Somfy roller shutter remote control problem, what to do?

Initially, and although it may seem obvious to some, you will have to try to replace the battery of the Somfy remote control which no longer works, both if the roller shutter gives no sign of life or if it operates abnormally.

Note: If you have a Somfy Smoove remote control, and therefore hung on the wall, you have to press on the side of the wall bracket to unclip it.

Remember when you replace the battery to check the condition of the battery compartment. Indeed, if the pins are dirty or damaged, it is possible that the current will not pass correctly. If the battery compartment is dirty, clean it. If it is damaged (oxidized), scrub the pins.

If changing the batteries of the Somfy remote control does not solve the problem on your roller shutter, if there is no reaction from the LED, or if it remains lit and red after pressing the buttons (Prog, My or up/down), then the problem comes either from deprogramming between the shutter and the control, or from a hardware failure on the latter.

Reset roller shutter electrically

Then check if the Somfy roller shutter remote control problem is not due to a software bug minor. For it, turn off the electric current shutter for 5 seconds, then turn on the power. Afterwards :

  1. If the shutter moves: simultaneously press the up and down arrows on the remote control.
  2. If the shutter moves: Briefly press the “prog” button on the back of the remote control.
  3. Finally, if the shutter moves: Test whether the Somfy roller shutter operates normally.

If the roller shutter does not move in any of the steps or does not operate normally, then proceed to step engine reset and memorizing the Somfy remote control by following the troubleshooting steps below.

Resetting and reprogramming the shutter and the Somfy remote control

If in the previous step, your roller shutter moved when you pressed the up and down buttons on the remote control, go directly to the limit switch reprogramming step. If your Somfy roller shutter has not made any movement, or if simply reprogramming the ends of travel has not worked, then carry out the entire procedure below to try to resolve the remote control problem.

You have been warned! : The double power cut risks deprogramming all the radio roller shutters attached to the circuit. This is why, before realizing it, the motor of your Somfy roller shutter on which you are working must be electrically isolated. To isolate the shutter, you can either disconnect the motors of the other shutters on the junction box, or temporarily connect the motor of the faulty shutter to a separate socket. You can also try, at first, to simply perform the limit switch adjustment procedure, without carrying out the double power cut, but there is a good chance that this will not succeed.

– Reset shutter memory

To reset the Somfy roller shutter motor :

  1. Cut the electric current of the shutter for 2 seconds
  2. Restore power for 8 seconds
  3. Turn off the power supply for 2 seconds
  4. Permanently restore the power supply
  5. The flap should move back and forth automatically

If the shutter does not react at all to the double power cut, then the problem is certainly due to the engine which is totally defective. In this case, we invite you to read our article: Motor problem on a Somfy roller shutter, what to do? If the shutter has reacted well to the procedure, then you can proceed to the next steps of resetting and reprogramming the Somfy remote control which no longer works.

– Reset and reprogram the Somfy remote control

To reset and reprogram a Somfy remote control :

  1. Press and hold the " prog on the back of the control for 7 seconds. Attention, this action must be carried out within 2 minutes following the double power cut.
  2. Release the button when the shutter performs two back and forth movements. Your Somfy remote control is now reset and re-paired to your shutter.

Si the roller shutter does not react at this stage, that the LED indicator does not light up, that it flashes or stays fixed red even after the reset procedure, then the Somfy remote control is probably faulty. In this case, you will need to replace it. We invite you to move on to the next part of the article. Whether the shutter reacts, then try to adjust the lower and upper limit switches of the shutter.

– Reprogram the limit switch of the electric shutter

To reprogram the limit switch of the Somfy electric shutter :

  1. Simultaneously press the up arrow and the down arrow on the control until the shutter automatically performs a short back and forth movement.
  2. Press the down arrow. If the shutter goes up, press the middle button of the "my" control to reverse the direction of rotation.
  3. Press the up arrow on the control until the shutter is at its highest point and therefore fully open. Then, press the "my" and "down" buttons simultaneously to program the upper limit switch. The shutter should start lowering automatically.
  4. Stop the shutter halfway by briefly pressing the "my" button.
  5. Press the down arrow until the shutter is fully closed. Then, press the "my" and "up" buttons simultaneously to program the lower limit switch. The flap should rise automatically.
  6. Stop the shutter again by pressing the “my” button.
  7. Press the "my" button for about 2 seconds until the shutter makes a short movement.
  8. Press the "prog" button on the back of the remote control to validate the procedure for registering the remote control and adjusting the limit switch.

Replace the Somfy remote control that no longer works

At this stage, the remote control problem on your Somfy roller shutter should be resolved. If this is not the case and you are certain that the failure is indeed from the remote control and not from the motor, then you will need to replace it. To replace a Somfy remote control that no longer works, it's simple. Just order a new identical remote control, using the same radio technology (RTS or wired).

For pair and program the new Somfy remote control to your roller shutter, here is the procedure:

  1. Electrically isolate the shutter you wish to pair with the new remote control
  2. Cut the power supply to the Somfy electric shutter for 2 seconds
  3. Restore power for 8 seconds
  4. Turn off the power supply for 2 seconds
  5. Restore the power supply to the shutter. It should move back and forth automatically
  6. Push the button " prog » on the back of the remote to register the remote

Your new Somfy remote control should be programmed and synchronized with your shutter. If this operation did not work, you will then have to carry out the previous procedure of double power cut, reprogramming of the remote control and limit switch adjustment. Note that the pairing and programming indications will all be indicated in the notice of the new remote control.
