Dyson hair dryer not turning on, what to do?

A hair dryer is for many people, an essential accessory in the hair routine. The Dyson hair dryer has been able to meet all the requirements, which makes it a top-of-the-range product. So we expect performance, robustness and reliability. This is why, when a breakdown occurs, one can legitimately be very disappointed. But then, How can you fix your Dyson hair dryer that won't turn on? If in some cases solving the problem can be done on your own, it is also possible that despite all your efforts, you will have to call a professional to manage to resuscitate him. So without further ado, discover all the solutions to fix it below.

Why is your Dyson hair dryer not turning on?

While you absolutely needed your hair dryer to do your brushing, this one is acting up. It turns off and refuses to turn on again or it does not turn on at all? This failure is relatively common because when your Dyson hair dryer does not start, it may be due to different factors :

  • a faulty power source
  • a clogged filter
  • clogged air ducts
  • a faulty component (electronic board, power cable, thermal fuse, motor, or switch).

Note that if your Dyson hair dryer has stopped in use and won't turn back on, there is a strong probability that he suffered a overheated. In this case, the device's automatic circuit breaker has tripped to prevent damage to the internal components sensitive to excessively high temperatures. If you are in this situation, you will have to wait about ten minutes for the device to cool down before you can turn it on again. You will also need to try to find the origin of the breakdown to prevent it from happening again. For this, we invite you to consult our article on this subject: What should I do when my Dyson hair dryer stops by itself?

What to do when your Dyson hair dryer has stopped working?

When your Dyson hair dryer not workingit will take attempt to identify the cause of the failure so that you can resolve it in the right way. To do this, we recommend that you carry out the checks and operations below in order.

Check Dyson hair dryer power source

Dyson hair dryer not turning on what to do?

First of all, and although it may sometimes seem logical, your Dyson hair dryer may simply not turn on because it has lost power. In this case, you should only see no light flashing. You will then need to check that the power source your hair dryer is plugged into is working properly. For it :

• Brdock another assistive device on the same power outlet as your hair dryer. If the socket no longer works, call an electrician to repair the installation in your home.

• Check that the hair dryer has not tripped or blew the fuse in the electrical panel. If so, the power grid has detected a short circuit or electrical overload problem. It will then first be necessary to check whether there is an electrical overload in the part in question. Then check if the circuit breaker trips when you use the hair dryer. If this is the case, you must then stop using the hair dryer and call a professional repairer because a short circuit can be dangerous (responsible for electric shock or fire).

• Remove power strip and extension cord which can cause electrical noise and voltage problems. For powerful electrical appliances such as your Dyson hair dryer, it is strongly recommended that you plug them directly into your home's electrical outlet, without any intermediary. Power strips are one of the most common causes of home fires.

Check that the filter and the air ducts are clean

Si your Dyson hair dryer has stopped working and its lights are flashing red or white, the problem may be caused by filter and/or its air ducts that are clogged. Indeed, when these elements are dirty, they tend to cause the device to overheat. For safety reasons, Dyson then implemented a circuit breaker which causes the hair dryer to switch off when the air ducts or the filter are clogged.

To get your Dyson hair dryer working again, it will then need to be checked for any obstructions. Here are the checks and manipulations to be carried out:

  • Make sure that the air inlets and outlets of the hair dryer are clear. If the grilles appear dirty, clean them with a dry, clean, soft (lint-free) cloth.
  • Check that the filter is not clogged. If so, remove dirt, dust, pet hair and hair from the filter. The filter is located at the base of the handle of your Dyson hair dryer, below the gray grille. Discover in image how to clean the filter thanks to the Dyson Tutorial video :
Caution: - These manipulations are performed with the power off! - Never use any lubricant, cleaning agent or air freshener on any part of the device. Cleaning is done with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth.

Testing Dyson hair dryer components

Finally, it may be that your Dyson hair dryer no longer starts because one of its internal components has failed. In this case, handling is reserved for people with electrical homes. Indeed, you will have to disassemble the device, check and test the various components, then replace the defective components, knowing that spare parts are rarely available to individuals. In addition to risking irreversible damage to your hair dryer, there is a risk of electrocution. If you are not competent, then call a professional.

Please note: If your faulty Dyson hair dryer is still under guarantee, immediately contact the Dyson after-sales service because you will get it repaired free of charge. Note that disassembling the hair dryer will void your warranty rights.

When your Dyson hair dryer won't turn on, here's the components most likely to have failed :

The power cable

When your Dyson hair dryer has stopped working at all (no lights on), the problem may be with the power cord. Indeed, if the cord is stripped, cut, damaged or disconnected from its terminal, it will not be able to transmit the current to the device which will not be able to start. The fault may be visible on the outer cord. If you notice that it is stripped, melted or cut, it's a safe bet that the problem comes from there. It also happens that the cord is simply detached from its thimble due to a shock or repeated vibrations. You will then simply have to put the conductive wire back in its terminal and then tighten the screws. If it appears damaged or cut, it will need to be replaced.

Note: Avoid wrapping the Dyson hair dryer's power cord too firmly around it when you store it (especially if it is hot) as this can damage its internal connectors and end up causing a bad contact and therefore a failure such as the one you are experiencing.

On/Off switch

If your Dyson hair dryer won't start at all and again if there are no lights on, the problem could also be with the On/Off switch. It may be faulty or broken. To verify this hypothesis, it will be necessary to carry out a continuity test. The multimeter should beep or display a value close to 0 when running and no beep, 1 or OL when stopped. If the multimeter does not display anything or does not beep in the on position, then the switch will need to be replaced.

The thermal fuse

If your Dyson hair dryer has stopped heating or has stopped working, the thermal fuse may be the cause of the fault. And this is all the more likely if the shutdown occurred as a result of overheating and/or a burning smell. The fuse is a thermal safety which is in the resistance of the device. When it detects way too much heat and inefficient ventilation, it is programmed to “jump” and turn the unit off. You will then need to perform a continuity test on the fuse using a multimeter. If there is no continuity, it is broken and then you will need to replace it to get the device working normally again.

Note: When your Dyson hair dryer not heating but it lights up, it could also be that the resistor is faulty. In this case, it will have to be tested and replaced. Note that Dyson spare parts are very hard to find. This is why we advise you to call on a professional repairer (or Dyson after-sales service if you are still entitled to the guarantee).

Engine

The motor is the centerpiece of the hair dryer because it drives the turbine that sucks in cold air and pushes it out. If the hair dryer turns on (light on) but does not start (no motor noise or a choked or muffled noise), the problem is most likely with the motor. You will then need to measure the voltage at its terminals using a multimeter set to an alternating current voltmeter. If the voltage is approximately 220V, it is working normally. Otherwise, it is defective. It will then have to be replaced.

The power board

Finally, the Dyson hair dryer may no longer work because the electronic board is faulty. To check this, measure the input and output supply voltage using a multimeter set to AC voltmeter. In the case where the two voltages are approximately similar (about 220V) the board works. If the voltage is zero, lower or not the same, the board is faulty and you will therefore have to replace it.
